Why PA6, PA66 and PA12 Need to Be Pulverized?

2026-09-09

Nylon (PA) is one of the most versatile engineering plastics in modern manufacturing — but in many downstream processes, PA granules simply cannot be processed directly. Before 3D printing, rotomolding or powder coating, the material must first be converted into a fine, uniform powder. That is where a professional PA pulverizer becomes essential.

Why Pulverize PA6, PA66 and PA12?

Grinding the PA series into powder is required when the material cannot be processed directly by injection molding or extrusion. The main applications are:

1. 3D Printing (Laser Sintering, SLS / MJF)

Selective laser sintering and Multi Jet Fusion both require polymer powders with controlled particle size and flowability. Fine, consistent PA powder is the backbone of industrial polymer 3D printing.

2. Coating and Surface Protection (Spraying, Rotational Lining, Dip Coating)

Powder coating and dip coating rely on fine powder to build uniform protective layers on metal surfaces — wire baskets, pipe fittings, kitchen racks — where PA powder provides abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and a smooth finish.

3. Rotational Molding (Rotomolding)

Large hollow plastic parts — such as special fuel tanks and containers — depend on powder that tumbles and melts against the heated mold wall, building up the part layer by layer.

4. Composite Materials and Modification (as Additive / Micro Powder)

Fine PA powder acts as a high-performance additive and reinforcement micro powder in composite formulations, improving homogeneity and mechanical performance.

5. Uniform, High-Concentration Dispersion of Masterbatch and Additives

When producing high-concentration masterbatches or specialty additives, PA powder offers an exponentially larger specific surface area than large granules. Pigments and additives can be coated far more evenly, preventing color spots or poor dispersion during extrusion.

How to Choose a PA Pulverizer?

The right choice depends on the raw material’s characteristics and, above all, on the required powder fineness and output capacity.

PA6: Disc Pulverizer — MF-BS-800
For PA6, the BEISU MF-BS-800 disc pulverizer fully meets the requirement of 20–30 mesh powder, with low energy consumption, low running cost and a stable output of 250–300 kg/h.

How to Increase PA6 Output and Enhance Cooling? Three BEISU Custom Options:

A1: Custom stainless steel grinding chamber — easier to clean and more effective in protecting material quality.

A2: Custom air cooling blower for the grinding chamber — rapidly lowers the grinding temperature and prevents material sticking or scorching.

A3: Custom ultrasonic vibrating screen — significantly improves screening speed and capacity while suppressing powder adhesion.

PA66 & PA12: Turbo Air-Flow Pulverizer

PA66 is noticeably more difficult to grind than PA12: its high toughness and tendency to stick to the chamber wall make conventional disc milling inefficient. Both PA66 and PA12 are therefore processed on the turbo air-flow pulverizer, which produces the fine, free-flowing powder required by SLS/MJF 3D printing.

What Is a Turbo Air-Flow Pulverizer?

A turbo air-flow pulverizer is a high-efficiency grinding machine in which a high-speed rotating turbo rotor generates a powerful air flow. Materials are ground to ultra-fine powder through impact, shear, collision and vortex effects — between particles and between particles and the machine body.

It produces powders of 60–200 mesh and is especially suitable for medium-to-low hardness, heat-sensitive or tough materials, such as PP, EVA, PA, PMMA, TPU, TPE, polyurethane, EPDM rubber, photovoltaic materials, PVA and PPS.

Working Principle of Turbo Air-Flow Pulverizer

▪ Air Intake and Acceleration: Material enters the grinding chamber through the feed inlet. The high-speed turbo rotor creates a strong negative-pressure vortex air field inside the chamber.
▪ High-Speed Impact Grinding: Carried by the swirling air flow, the material is accelerated and subjected to frequent impact, shear and friction in the narrow gap between the rotor blades and the stator teeth. At the same time, particles collide violently with each other in the high-speed air stream, achieving pulverization.
▪ Air Classification: Powder that has reached the target fineness is carried out of the grinding chamber and collected by a cyclone separator or bag filter. Coarse particles are thrown back to the periphery by centrifugal force and re-enter the grinding process.

Key Technical Features:

The PA66/PA12 air-flow pulverizer effectively solves the problems of nylon’s high toughness and chamber-wall sticking, but it also has some drawbacks you should be aware of:

▪ High initial investment: Besides the main mill, the complete system requires a high-pressure air compressor, refrigerated air dryer, air storage tank, high-efficiency classifier, pulse dust collector and automated control system — a considerable investment in equipment and floor space.
▪ Relatively low single-machine output: Compared with traditional disc pulverizers processing ordinary plastics such as PVC and PE, the hourly capacity (kg/h) of PA66 in an air-flow mill is relatively small — not ideal for very-large-scale coarse powder production.
▪ Strict requirements on feed size: Feed material must be uniform small granules below 3–5 mm to ensure stable feeding.
